Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory – Chemical Bonding – Digital Kemistry

Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory :
Also known as vsepr theory

Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory is good enough to explain :
1.Molecular Geometries.
2. Bond angles.
Postulates of Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion Theory :
1.Two types of electron pairs are present around the central atom.
1. Bond pair (Shared electron pair)
2.Lone pair (unshared electron pair )
For Example:
CH4 molecule having 4 bond pair electrons .

NH3 having 3 bond pair & one lone pair electrons.
2. Electron pairs repel each other and the order of repulsion is:

lone pair-lone pair > lone pair-bond pair > bond pair-bond pair

3. To reduce the repulsion the electron pair move to maximum angle apart from each other and become stable .

4. Multiple bonds (i.e. double bond & triple bond) acts as a single bond because single bond (bond pair) or sigma bond  & lone pair electrons are responsible for molecular shape whereas double and triple bond is not involved in giving molecular shape.
Molecular Geometries on the basis of
electron pair

1.Linear Geometry
2. Trigonal planar Geometry
3. Tetrahedral Geometry.
