 Difference between Octet Rule and Duplet Rule :

What is duplet?

Atom with 2 electrons in its outermost shell is called duplet .

Duplet Rule:

The tendency of an atom to acquire 2 electrons in outermost shell .

Atoms with low atomic number such as hydrogen and helium followed the duplet rule.

What is Octet?

Atom with 8 electrons in its outermost shell is called octet .

Octet Rule:

The tendency of an atom to acquire 8 electrons in outermost shell in order to attain the noble gas configuration and becomes stable.

Atoms having 7 or less than 7 electrons in its valence shell followed octet rule.
