Detection of Phosphorus:

The procedure for the detection of phosphorus in an organic compound involves the following steps.

Step 1 :

An organic compound is heated strongly with an oxidizing agent such as concentrated nitric acid (HNO3) and a mixture of sodium carbonate( Na2CO3) and potassium nitrate (KNO3).

Step 2:

The residue is extracted with water.

Step 3:

The solution is boiled with some nitric acid (HNO3).

Step 4:

Then a hot solution of ammonium molybdate is added to it in excess.
