How ions are formed?

Ions are formed by the removal or addition of electron/s from a neutral atom.

Types of Ions:

There are two types of ions.

1.Positively Charged ion (Cation)

2.Negatively Charged ion (Anion)

Difference Between Cation & Anion:

Cation:

1.Cations are positively charged ion e.g. H+ , Na+ , Ca+2 etc.

2.Cations are formed by the lose of electron/s.

e.g. when Na atom loses one electron ,results in the formation of Na+ ion.

3.Cations contain more protons than electrons .Therefore , the size of cation is smaller the the corresponding neutral atom.

4.Cations are usually formed from metals.

Anion:

1.Anions are negatively charged ions .e.g. OH- ,Cl- , I- etc.

2.Anions are formed by the gain of electron/s e.g. Cl atom after the gain of one electron form chloride ion(Cl-).

3.Anions contain more electrons than protons. Therefore, the size of anion is bigger than the corresponding atom.

4.Anions are usually formed from non-metal.
