What are Hydrogen Bonds?

The force of attraction in which hydrogen atom is covalently bonded to a highly electronegative atom in a molecule is attracted by the unshared electron pair of another electronegative atom in a nearby molecule is called hydrogen bonding.

EXAMPLES OF HYDROGEN BONDING FROM DAILY LIFE

  1. Water

2. Protein

3. Honey

4. Soap and detergents

5. DNA

6. Paints

7. Glue

Types of Hydrogen Bonds:

There are two types of Hydrogen bonds.

1.Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonds

2. Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonds

Types of H-bonding

Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding Definition:

Intermolecular Hydrogen bonds are formed between two molecules.

Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding Examples:

Hydrogen Bonding between water(H2O) molecules, ammonia (NH3)molecules, and Hydrogen Fluoride(HF) molecules.

H-bond between water molecules
H-bond between H-F

Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding Definition:

Hydrogen bonds are formed between two different atoms in the same molecule.

Example of Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding:

o-nitro phenol
