What is a simple definition of Chemistry. Also briefly explain branches of chemistry.
Branch of science that deals with the study of matter, changes in matter, and the laws and principles that govern these changes
The origin of the term chemistry is the word KEEM. The same name was given to ancient Egypt. As time progressed, the science of chemistry spread from one generation to the next and eventually reached Arabia. There, the name KEEM was changed to AL KIMIYA.
The primary objective of chemistry is to understand the properties and transformations of matter. Chemistry is essential to our daily lives.
Branches of Chemistry with Examples
Following are the different branches of chemistry
1. PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY
Physical Chemistry studies the concepts and principles that help us grasp the structure and transformations of matter.
When heated, water evaporates and transforms into vapours. This phenomenon is explained through physical chemistry
2. ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
The branch of chemistry deals with compounds in which the major element is CARBON except for carbonates, bicarbonates, cyanides, oxides, etc.
The different properties of methane gas can be understood through organic chemistry
3. INORGANIC CHEMISTRY
The branch of chemistry that deals with all compounds except organic compounds is known as inorganic chemistry
The basis to study the properties of water is given by inorganic chemistry
The branch of chemistry that deals with the chemical processes occurring inside living bodies is known as biochemistry
The process of exchange of respiratory gases and breakdown of food is explained through biochemistry
5. INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY
The branch that deals with methods used in industries for large-scale production of different chemical substances is known as industrial chemistry
The production of fertilizers in industries is done through the knowledge of industrial chemistry
6. NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY
The branch that deals with changes in the nucleus is called nuclear chemistry
The processes of nuclear fission and fusion can be explained by nuclear chemistry
7. ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY
The branch that deals with knowledge of pollutants in the environment and their adverse effects on living beings is called environmental chemistry
The effects of acid rain and Photochemical smog are studied through this branch.
8. ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
The branch that deals with the instruments and processes determining the composition of matter is known as analytical chemistry
The percentage composition and mole/mass ratio are calculated through this branch.
