What is the Organic Chemistry Old Concept and Modern Concept- Organic Chemistry Notes

Do you Know !!

What is Organic Chemistry?

Definition :

The study of structure, properties, composition, reactions and preparations of hydrocarbons and their derivatives.”

The word “organic” means Life.

Organic Chemistry: (old concept)

Organic chemistry is the study of compounds of carbon as carbon is the essential element in all organic compounds.

Compounds of carbon with few exceptions

These exceptions are as follows:

  1. Carbon monoxide (CO)

2. Carbon dioxide (CO2)

3. Carbon disulphide (CS2)

4. Carbonates (CO32-)

5. Bicarbonates (HCO3)

6. Cyanides (CN)

7. Cyanates (CNO )

8. Metal Carbides (C4-) etc.

These compounds contain carbon but these are not organic compounds. These are inorganic compounds.

Why all carbon compounds are not organic compounds?

All carbon-containing compounds are not organic compounds because their physical and chemical properties and reaction are not similar to organic compounds. Some of the exceptions are given above.

Nowadays organic compounds are defined as:

Organic Chemistry: (Modern concept)

Organic chemistry is the branch of chemistry that deals with the study of compounds of carbon and hydrogen (Hydrocarbons) and their derivatives.

Besides carbon and hydrogen, organic compounds also contain oxygen, nitrogen, Sulphur and halogen elements.

Sometimes organic compounds also contain metal elements like Si, Pb, Fe etc. . such compounds are called organometallic compounds.
